Vespers - The Passover Door

  • Christ Lutheran Church 501 N Clear Springs Rd Mustang United States (map)

"I Am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved..." (John 10:9). There are several famous doors in Scripture. These doors are dividing lines between God's judgment and God's mercy. This Lent we will travel through Scripture examining some of these doors.

The night before the Israelites were to be set free from the Egyptians, the Lord God institutes the Passover. Each household (or multiple families together) are to sacrifice a lamb without blemish, and then put its blood on the door frame of the house. This would be a sign to God to "passover" this house as he meets out the last plague: the death of the firstborn. Only the houses with the blood would be spared. Today, our passover lamb is Jesus Christ - "the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). In our baptisms we are washed in the blood of the lamb and made clean. Eternal death is removed from us and the forgiveness of sins and life everlasting are given its place.
