Curse of Babel’s Language Confusion (Genesis 11:1–9): At Babel God “confused the language of all the earth” and scattered the people (Gen. 11:9). The New Testament mirrors a reversal of this curse at Pentecost: the apostles “began to speak in other tongues” and each listener “hear[s] them in his own language” (Acts 2:4–8). Thus, where Babel divided the nations, the Spirit unites them in the gospel (cf. 1 Cor. 12:13). As one commentator notes, Peter’s table of nations at Pentecost (Acts 2:9–11) “signals a reversal of the Babel curse through faith in the Mediator [Christ]”. In Christ there is one new humanity (Gal. 3:28) under one Spirit, undoing Babel’s division.
