Reversing the Curse: Slavery

  • Christ Lutheran Church 501 N Clear Springs Rd Mustang United States (map)

Curse of the Law (Deuteronomy 27:26; Galatians 3:13): The Law pronounced a curse on anyone who failed to keep it: “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law” (Deut. 27:26). Paul quotes that curse in Galatians 3:10, then proclaims its end: “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us”. Jesus took on the curse (cf. Deut. 21:23) by hanging on the cross, so that believers are no longer cursed by the Law. In Christ’s new covenant this OT curse is lifted – the penalty for failing the Law is paid by Jesus, and believers now receive God’s blessing (Gal. 3:13–14). This reverses the Old Testament’s curse for disobedience and fulfills God’s promise that His people would be freed from sin and wrath in Christ.
